BOOST FOR TOURISM Local Paper Article 20th October 2006
Improvement plan swings
into action

A TOTAL OF 13 SEPARATE TOURISM PROJECTS – DESIGNED TO PULL IN MORE
VISITORS TO THE PROVINCE – HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT IN TOWNS SUCH AS
VERA, GARRUCHA, MOJACAR AND BEDAR.
The municipalities of the Almería
Levante Association last week signed contracts with firms to carry out 1,650,000
euros-worth of new schemes.
The projects are designed to provide a stable
infrastructure for tourism in an area of 1,500 square kilometres on Almería’s
eastern coast.
Many are geared towards boosting the region’s reputation
for quality tourism, highlighting areas of ecological interest and
environmentally protected zones.
Viewpoints overlooking areas of natural
beauty in the towns of Huercal-Overa and Taberno are to be constructed, along
with a network of rambling routes in a pine forest close to Pulpí.
The
creation of botanical gardens in Vera and a nature reserve in Garrucha are also
planned.
In other towns work will concentrate on improving the appeal of
areas already popular with tourists, ensuring that attractions are clearly
signposted and buildings of historical importance are renovated.
Under
this initiative, Pulpí’s old quarter will receive a clean up, while work in the
towns of Bedar, Cuevas del Almanzora and Carboneras is scheduled to improve
tourist access.
Another initiative will give the church of the Purísima
Concepción in Turre night time illumination and improvements will also be made
to the Puente Viejo bridge in Antas.
In Mojácar work will concentrate on
providing the town with adequate pedestrian crossings and the creation of green
areas along the seafront.
The projects are part of the first phase of a
four-million-euro plan to stimulate tourism in the Levante.
The plan was
drawn up at the end of 2005 in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and
sets out a series of objectives for the region.
These were to increase
the quality of services offered to tourists, to improve access to both urban and
environmentally protected areas, and to educate and involve the population in
the creation of a quality tourist destination.
The ministry’s delegate
Maribel Requena said: “The plan will convert the area into a more complete
tourist des-tination and, therefore, a more competitive one.”
The
implementation of the full plan is scheduled to take place over the next three
years.
Future projects include a railway museum in Huercal-Overa, an
aquarium in Vera and an archaeological museum in Turre.
